What to Expect Before Your Psilocybin Administration Session
There’s still not enough clear information out there about legal psilocybin
services. People may know that psilocybin works, but not what the actual
process looks like or how to even get started. This piece is my attempt to
change that—to answer the questions people keep asking and to explain, in
plain language, how and why this process works.
Who Is Eligible?
First things first, you have to be over 21. That’s a hard line. If you’re
over 21, anyone can come to Oregon, and most people who do don’t even live
here. They travel in from all over the place.
Now, before you get too far down the road, there are a few
non-negotiables. If you’ve taken lithium within the last 30 days, if
you’re dealing with active thoughts of harming yourself or others, or if
you’ve ever had an active psychosis diagnosis, those are disqualifiers.
Crossing the legal threshold doesn’t automatically mean psilocybin is a
good fit. Some service centers use intake forms that rule out whole
diagnoses—bipolar disorder, for example—as a blanket business call. At
Satya, we do it differently. We talk with you. We flag specific risks,
spell them out plainly, and help you weigh whether this is right for you
right now. We only refuse service on rare occasions when the risk
genuinely looks too high.
Why We Screen Clients
Our screening isn’t about keeping people out. It’s about informed
consent. Statewide data shows that roughly one in 150 clients ends up
generating an emergency call. As risk factors add up, the odds go up too.
Our job is to make sure clients actually understand those risks so they
can make a grounded decision.
Your First Conversation
Usually, the first touch is a call with me or with Jennifer. People come
in with a lot of questions.
- Am I eligible?
- What’s it cost?
- Is there a wait?
- How does it even work?
Some folks share a lot and some share very little. We don’t probe. We
answer what you ask, plainly and fully. We encourage you to talk with
several facilitators so you can get a feel for the right fit, because fit
really matters.
Choosing a Facilitator
Sometimes a client asks us to recommend a facilitator. We hesitate at
first, but once we learn a bit more, we can point to a few who might
align. Some centers assign a facilitator outright. We don’t. We believe
choosing your facilitator is one of the most important decisions in the
process. So we don’t take that choice away from you.
Jennifer and I are always available to answer general process
questions—eligibility, timing, cost, what the steps look like—and we’ll
give you plain answers. Once you’ve chosen a facilitator, that
relationship is private. We step back, and that confidentiality is
intentional.
Most facilitators listed on our website have contact information where
clients can reach out to them directly. Some facilitators have chosen not
to list contact information. In those cases, clients often ask us to
connect them with several facilitators. We will either respond by email
and copy the facilitators you would like to speak with, or we will create
a group text and connect everyone at once. This keeps you from having to
act as the go-between, reduces unnecessary coordination, and lets each
facilitator know that other facilitators are also part of your selection
process.
At that point, each facilitator will reach out and establish contact for
a free introductory call. That conversation might last ten minutes or it
might last an hour. It depends. After talking with as many facilitators as
you like, you can choose one, or you can decide not to proceed at all.
At any point, you can pause, switch facilitators, or decide not to
proceed.
Costs and Payment
Most facilitators don’t charge for preparation, but some do. It’s
important to know up front what those fees are and whether they’re
refundable. Facilitators are required to give you a clear cost breakdown
and refund policy. Not doing so is a violation of state rules.
Facilitators should explain any preparation fees and refund policies
clearly. Our position is that the decision to proceed should be based on
your readiness, not money already spent. That way charges never create
pressure to continue.
At Satya, the choice to proceed is based on readiness. Our charges are
taken when you arrive, not weeks before, so money doesn’t steer the
decision.
Our website lists all-inclusive prices, covering facilitation, room, and
psilocybin. Those totals assume Journey Room 2. A different room may vary
slightly. Prices start at $900, all inclusive (room, facilitator, psilocybin).
Preparation Sessions
Once you have decided upon a facilitator, the facilitator will schedule
the required preparation sessions.
Every facilitator runs preparation sessions within their own timeframe
and guidelines. When selecting a facilitator, it is important to ask what
their preparation process looks like so you can decide whether their
outlook and approach to facilitation match your own.
In preparation, your facilitator handles the required paperwork and
starts building the trust that carries into the administration session.
In intense moments, that bond can help ground you and support you through
the hard parts.
We don’t direct your answers. You choose what to share. You may reveal a
great deal about your struggles, your goals, or your personality, or you
may choose not to answer certain questions. At the same time, the
facilitator must determine whether your needs and goals fall within their
scope of practice. If they decide they are not the right person to
facilitate your journey, they are required to tell you and may recommend
that you speak with another facilitator.
Some facilitators will do one preparation session with you. Others will
do as many preparation sessions as they believe are necessary. While
screening facilitators, ask each person how they handle preparation and
what their approach is.
When you feel ready, you will tell your facilitator when you would like
to come in, and the facilitator will book a room for you at Satya.
Preparation is a very important part of the process. Clients who invest
in preparation often feel more oriented and supported during the session.
Preparation sessions are usually conducted by Zoom for people who live
out of town, although they may also be done in person.
It is a good idea to allow one to two weeks, or longer, to complete
preparation. Rushing preparation is rarely helpful. Some facilitators
will not work with clients who are trying to rush through the process.
Before You Schedule Your Administration Session
Before moving forward, ask yourself:
- What is your reason for doing this, and what are you hoping will be
different? - Have you chosen a facilitator you genuinely trust?
- Have you asked about their preparation process and the number of
sessions they conduct? - Does their style fit what you are looking for?
- Do you understand their fees and refund policies?
- Do you know what is included in the total price?
- Have you arranged transportation to and from your administration
session? Most facilitators offer this service if you choose. - Can you give yourself enough time for preparation rather than rushing?
If you cannot confidently answer the questions that matter most, you may
not be ready to schedule administration. Preparation is not a hurdle. It
is part of the process.
Planning Your Trip to Ashland
Once you have gone through preparation and are ready to come to Satya, we
recommend several things.
If you’re flying, aim to arrive in the early afternoon. Avoid the last
flight in, as cancellations can push your arrival to the next day and
create problems for your journey.
Most people fly into Medford, Oregon, using airport code MFR. Some people
fly into Portland and drive to Ashland, which takes roughly four hours
and forty-five minutes. Others drive to Ashland from California or
elsewhere in Oregon.
Most people stay in Ashland. It’s a friendly college town. We have
courtesy rates at the Ashland Springs Hotel and Lithia Springs Resort
(enter SATYA when booking via the website). Satya does not receive any
compensation for those rates. There are very few bad places to stay in
Ashland, so stay wherever feels comfortable.
Facilitators do not arrange travel, but Andreas, Jennifer, or your
facilitator can point you toward options.
A Final Thought
If you feel anxious about the process, that is perfectly normal. Coming
to Ashland for a psilocybin journey is a huge step—one that can change
your life. The further you get down the road, the more everything makes
sense. If you have any questions, we are always happy to answer them.
Coming Next
Next up: what really happens on administration day, step by step, so you
know what to expect.
Then we’ll cover integration—making sense of the experience and carrying
it forward.
