1. Potency Changes From Harvest to Harvest

In our last article, we pointed out some considerations to take into account when asking, “How much psilocybin should a client take?” More is not always better. Like the Three Bears, you want the amount that is just right—not too hot and not too cold.

Mushrooms are living beings. Some people believe they are sentient, to which I have no comment. Our experience growing them for several years is that their potency—and the way they present themselves—changes from harvest to harvest. We do not have research evidence explaining exactly why this happens, but our experience and laboratory results show that it does.

Because mushrooms are not pharmaceutical chemicals, we have to deal with potency during every production cycle. We have become very good at managing these changes in a way that serves the best interests of our clients and the clients of Oregon’s regulated psilocybin system.

We do the best we can to maintain consistent manufacturing processes. But there will always be environmental variability that changes growing conditions from day to day: ambient room temperature and humidity, the moisture content of the original grain spawn, the moisture content of the coco coir, vermiculite and gypsum (CVG) substrate, the airflow within a particular tote, and the amount of light each tote receives.

Every tote occupies a different physical location in the room. As a result, each one is subject to a slightly different set of growing conditions. We believe those differences affect how the mushrooms “express” themselves throughout their life cycle.

In the end, our expectation is that the conditions will be “good enough,” and then we let the mushrooms figure out what to do. After that, we use post-processing procedures to average out some of the variability and manufacture a finished product at the desired potency.

2. Satya’s Testing History Shows Significant Variability

We have tested 91 batch samples through Rose City Laboratories, a licensed psilocybin testing laboratory in Oregon Health Authority’s regulated psilocybin system.

The remarkable thing about these results is the size of the potency differences across the samples. Total equivalent psilocybin ranged from 0.18% to 1.33%, with an average of approximately 0.85%.

At that average potency of 0.85%, approximately 2.94 grams of dried mushrooms would contain 25 milligrams of total equivalent psilocybin. Another way of looking at it is that five grams of our “average” mushrooms would contain approximately 42.5 milligrams.

Even more remarkable is the variation we have seen in Halo, a genetic line we have grown for the past three years. Halo has tested from approximately 0.53% to 1.33% total equivalent psilocybin. That wide a range is unacceptable to us from the standpoint of providing predictable finished products. But the biological variation exists, and we have to manage it.

Some genetic lines have tested very weak—approximately 0.18%—while others, such as LG, have tested very strong at approximately 1.27%.

Wide variations are not good because they make it difficult for facilitators to know what to expect. Clients may spend thousands of dollars traveling to Oregon. The total cost of a journey can range from approximately $900 to $3,500, depending on where they go and which services they select.

It is imperative that a $50 component—the mushrooms—does not become a point of failure in the process.

So the question again is: What should we do?

3. The Confusion Between Genetics, Strains and Reality

Many clients come to us and ask for a specific strain, such as Golden Teacher. They may believe Golden Teachers will provide “vibrant visuals,” for example. Facilitators also sometimes request specific strains because they prefer—or believe they prefer—the results their favorite strains produce.

This creates a potential mode of failure for the journey.

Consider a situation in which a facilitator suggests Golden Teachers for their expected “visual” or “healing” effects. The client takes a very large dose and feels nothing. This happens to approximately one in 50 of our clients: they report feeling and seeing little or nothing.  That is incredibly disappointing

Imagine the conversation at the end of the journey:

“I took Golden Teachers at your suggestion, and they did nothing. What happened?”

What happened is that a promise—or at least an expectation—was created that a specific outcome would result from a strain name: Golden Teacher.

But what is a Golden Teacher?

It is a Psilocybe cubensis mushroom sold under the name Golden Teacher. You can source Golden Teacher genetics from thousands of suppliers. With that in mind, ask yourself: Are they all from the same source? Have different Golden Teachers changed over time? Do they always produce the same effects?

So far, we have shown that what we call a single strain can vary in potency from one harvest to another. We have also observed that the same genetic line can express itself very differently over time.

At an even higher level, Psilocybe cubensis is a species. Golden Teacher is a name. Homo sapiens is a species, and Joe is a name. Do we really believe that José in Mexico is the same as Joe in New York or Joe in Russia?

The point is that we do not know how one supplier’s Golden Teacher compares with another supplier’s Golden Teacher. There is no single, standardized “Golden Teacher.”

So this leaves us with a dilemma yet again: What should we do?

4. Growing, Harvesting, Drying and Storage Conditions Affect the Final Product

We do our best to control every variable we reasonably can during the growing cycle, from grain inoculation through propagation and harvest. At the same time, we have to contend with difficulties along the way, including changes in ambient temperature and humidity, contamination and power outages.

Large-scale commercial mushroom growers have the ability to “dial in” their processes because they have consistent, large-scale demand. Oregon’s psilocybin market is tiny. Satya could grow the entire supply for the State of Oregon in our facility, yet seven manufacturers are competing for that market. As a result, we do not operate continuous production cycles.

We therefore work with definite formulas and standards, coupled with a high dose of observation and improvisation.

Throughout the growing cycle, we use experience to guide us. If the totes look too humid and the mushrooms show signs that their environment is too moist, we might lower the humidity in the room. If only a few totes look too humid, we may adjust the airflow to those totes instead.

Every day involves an assessment in which we ask, “Does an intervention look necessary?” Then we ask, “How necessary is it?”

Mushrooms know how to grow. They have been doing it for many thousands of years. Most of the time, we intervene only when it appears necessary.

We have found that the worst results often occur when we inject our thoughts, hopes and beliefs into the growing cycle instead of letting the mushrooms “do their thing.” Our willingness to observe first and intervene carefully seems to produce the best results at every step of the process.

Sometimes, despite our best efforts, we end up with batches that look terrible and have no shelf appeal, or that produce a low yield. Ugly mushrooms and poor yields create another dilemma.

What do we do then?

5. The Horns of the Dilemma

Up to this point, we have identified several dilemmas:

Natural Variation Versus Dose Consistency

Mushrooms naturally vary in potency, but clients and facilitators need a reasonably predictable and consistent finished product.

Control Versus Intervention

We want to control growing conditions, but too much intervention can produce worse results than allowing the mushrooms to grow naturally.

Consistent Procedures Versus Inconsistent Outcomes

We may follow the same manufacturing process each time, yet different harvests can still produce significantly different potency results.

Strain Identity Versus Biological Reality

Clients and facilitators expect a named strain such as Golden Teacher to produce predictable effects, even though mushrooms sold under the same name may have different genetics, potency and characteristics.

Client Expectations Versus Unpredictable Experiences

Recommending a strain for “visual,” “healing” or other specific effects creates expectations that the actual experience may not fulfill.

Potency Variation Versus the Cost of Failure

The mushrooms may represent only about $50 of a journey costing $900 to $3,500, yet they can become the point of failure for the entire experience.

Unacceptable Variability Versus Unavoidable Variability

Halo has varied widely in potency. That variation is unacceptable from a dosing standpoint, but it is also a biological reality we must manage.

Appearance and Yield Versus Actual Value

A harvest may look terrible or produce a low yield, but that does not necessarily mean the mushrooms are weak, unsafe, or unusable. On the other hand, if no one wants to buy them, we have a small disaster to contend with: a growing cycle that failed commercially.

We address all of these potential problems through a blending and homogenization process.

6. The Melange Process

We begin by grinding the mushrooms finely and passing them through a sieve to establish a consistent particle size. We can then combine tested source material in calculated proportions to produce a finished blend within our targeted potency range.

We generally target between 0.6% and 0.8% total equivalent psilocybin in the final product. For example, if we combine 500 grams of mushrooms tested at 1.2% with 500 grams tested at 0.4%, the calculated potency of the 1,000-gram blend is 0.8%, assuming equal weights and complete mixing. We take two products that may be difficult to sell individually and use them to create a much more desirable finished product.

Problem solved.

What do we call these blends? Melange, of course, because mélange is French for “mixture” or “blend.” French, in this case, sounds and looks better than “blend.”

Calling the product Melange solves a central problem: it removes strain from the dosing conversation. Facilitators do not have to talk about strains at all. If the genetic lines included in the Melange are important to them, we can identify those components without promising that a strain name will produce a particular result. In some cases, we combine seven or more genetic lines in a single Melange.

Finally—and probably most importantly—we produce and test Melanges in batches of approximately 1,000 grams. A grower might otherwise test 300 grams from a single harvest that contains meaningful internal variation.

The final laboratory result then establishes the measured potency of the Melange. This gives us a more defensible basis for calculating the amount of product required to provide a particular number of milligrams of total equivalent psilocybin.

The Melange process does not eliminate biological or analytical variability. It substantially reduces the manufacturing variability that facilitators and clients would otherwise encounter in the finished product.

For statewide perspective, OHA sales records show that homogenized fungi accounted for 23.4% of all product units sold in 2023. In 2026 through July 21, that share had grown to 74.3%. Measured by dollar sales, homogenized fungi increased from 17.7% of sales in 2023 to 60.3% in 2026.  The market is coming to the same conclusion we have: more uniform finished products give facilitators and clients better information for dosing decisions—and more consistent outcomes.

7. The Moral of the Story

The moral of the story is that we cannot force mushrooms to become pharmaceutical chemicals, and we should stop pretending that a strain name makes them predictable. What matters regarding psilocybin mushroom potency from harvest to harvest is not what the mushrooms are called, how attractive they look, or what the previous harvest tested at. What matters is the measured potency and uniformity of the finished product that will actually be provided to the client.

We have to respect the natural variability, measure what the mushrooms produced, and use good manufacturing practices to create a more consistent final product. That is what the Melange process accomplishes. We take the variability that farming gives us and turn it into something facilitators can understand and clients can rely upon. The mushrooms are allowed to “do their thing,” but the final dose is not left to chance.

In the end, that is our responsibility as a manufacturer—and the answer to the question, “What matters regarding psilocybin mushroom potency from harvest to harvest?”

We must make sure a relatively inexpensive component does not become the point of failure in an experience that may cost a client thousands of dollars—and may be one of the most important experiences of their life.
