The question we hear most often from clients is:

“How much should I take?”

The most accurate answer is that you will discuss the dose with your licensed facilitator and make that decision together. There is no single dose that is appropriate for every person.

At Satya, 25 milligrams of psilocybin is a common starting target for clients who are not taking medications that may substantially affect the experience. This is also a dose frequently used in clinical research.

However, 25 mg should not be mistaken for a mild dose. Under clinical-trial conditions, it is considered a high dose and can produce an experience that many participants would describe as extremely intense—or even “heroic.”

Some clients taking SSRIs or other medications may require a different approach because certain medications can alter or reduce the effects of psilocybin. But medication use does not automatically mean that someone should receive 35 mg. SSRIs, antipsychotics and other medications must be considered individually during screening and dose planning.

Dose selection can also be affected by a client’s health history, sensitivity, previous psychedelic experiences, goals and comfort level. We will explore these factors in a future article.

Today, we are focusing on one critical but frequently misunderstood factor: mushroom potency.

Grams of mushrooms are not milligrams of psilocybin

Many clients come to Satya after reading books, watching documentaries or researching psilocybin online. They may have repeatedly heard that a “full dose” is 3.5 grams or that a “heroic dose” is 5 grams of dried mushrooms.

These recommendations are often combined with the assumption that dried mushrooms contain approximately 1% psilocybin.

The calculation then appears straightforward:

  • 3.5 grams at 1% potency contains approximately 35 mg.
  • 5 grams at 1% potency contains approximately 50 mg.

The arithmetic is correct. The assumption behind it may not be.

Mushrooms are biological products. Their potency varies with genetics, growing conditions, harvest timing, mushroom anatomy, processing and storage.

A gram tells us how much mushroom material someone consumes. It does not tell us how many milligrams of active compounds that material contains.

Oregon requires independent laboratory testing

Under Oregon’s regulated psilocybin program, products must be tested by an independent, licensed laboratory before they can be sold by a service center.

Rose City Laboratories performs this testing for Oregon’s regulated psilocybin market. Laboratory testing allows manufacturers and service centers to work with measured potency instead of relying on assumptions about a strain or an estimated industry average.

Rose City previously published a historical potency-distribution graph based on 201 Oregon potency tests completed through April 30, 2024.

We created a corresponding Satya graph using 91 Satya samples analyzed by Rose City Laboratories between May 3, 2023 and June 12, 2026.

The Satya results show:

The highest result came from Satya’s Halo genetics. An LG sample also tested at 1.27%.

The graphs make one point especially clear: assuming that all mushrooms are 1% potency is not supported by the laboratory results.

How much mushroom material contains 25 mg?

The practical importance becomes obvious when we calculate how much dried mushroom material would be required to provide a 25 mg dose.

Across Satya’s historical testing range, the same 25 mg target could require anywhere from approximately 1.8 to 9.9 grams of mushroom material.

That is an enormous difference.

A person consuming mushrooms based only on weight could receive dramatically different amounts of active compounds from one product to another.

How many milligrams are actually in 3.5 or 5 grams?

The calculation also works in the opposite direction.

Across Satya’s tested potency range:

Five grams of Satya’s least potent tested product would contain approximately 12.7 mg. Five grams of the most potent tested product would contain approximately 70.2 mg.

Those would not be remotely comparable experiences.

This is why a statement such as “I took five grams before” does not tell us how many milligrams of psilocybin someone previously consumed.

Without a laboratory result, the actual dose is unknown.

Why previous mushroom experiences may not predict an Oregon session

People who have previously consumed mushrooms outside Oregon’s regulated system frequently tell us that their Satya experience felt much stronger than earlier experiences involving a similar mushroom weight.

We have heard this repeatedly after serving more than 1,600 clients.

These reports are client observations, not controlled comparisons between Satya products and specific unregulated products. Nevertheless, several factors could explain the difference:

  • The earlier mushrooms may have had lower initial potency.
  • Their potency was probably never measured.
  • The genetics and growing conditions may have differed.
  • Harvesting and processing methods may have differed.
  • The mushrooms may have lost potency during storage.
  • The setting and circumstances of the earlier experience may have been different.

Storage is particularly important. Psilocybin mushrooms do not necessarily maintain their original potency indefinitely. Temperature, light, oxygen, moisture, processing and storage duration can affect the stability of psilocybin, psilocin and related compounds.

Unregulated mushrooms may have traveled through several hands and may have been stored for an unknown amount of time under unknown conditions.

Oregon manufacturers, by comparison, produce regulated products that are independently tested before being transferred to a licensed service center.

It is therefore entirely possible for five grams of an older or weaker untested product to contain less psilocybin than 3.5 grams—or even 2 grams—of a stronger laboratory-tested Oregon product.

Without testing the unregulated product, however, no one can know the actual difference.

Why manufacturing quality matters

Potency testing is not simply a regulatory formality. It provides information that directly supports more informed dosing decisions.

At Satya, we do not assume that a strain name predicts potency. We do not assume that every harvest will produce the same result. We do not assume that every gram of mushroom material contains 10 mg of psilocybin.

We grow the product, process it and submit it for independent testing. The laboratory result then tells us the measured concentration of active compounds in that specific production batch.

That is one of the most important differences between a regulated psilocybin product and an untested product from outside the Oregon system.

The lesson: dose in milligrams, not assumptions

Mushroom weight still matters because it tells us how much material a client will consume. But mushroom weight by itself does not establish the psilocybin dose.

The laboratory result connects the two measurements.

The Oregon model gives clients, facilitators, manufacturers and service centers the ability to work from actual testing instead of folklore, strain reputation or an assumed 1% average.

The lesson is straightforward:

Five grams is a weight. Twenty-five milligrams is a dose. They are not interchangeable.

Your final dose should be discussed with your facilitator and based on the tested product, your medications and health history, your prior experience, your goals and the type of experience you are seeking.
